Last week I was headed to Ancestor Square for a concert in the courtyard.

I've passed by this gorgeous horse many times, and should have known instantly that it was a piece by Matt Clark. However, it didn't hit me until this night. I wasn't in such a hurry and took a little more time to really give the horse a good look. It's pretty amazing. He is so talented!

Passing of Dennis Whitehead and Coach Don Lay

Next, . . .sad sad very sad news. . . . we've lost two loved ones this past month.

One was classmate Dennis Whithead, the other Coach Don Lay.

Dennis R. Whitehead died July 1, 2011, in Phoenix, AZ. Born July 8, 1960, in California. Chosen by his parents Fawn and Wesley Whitehead when he was three years old.

Dennis lived in St. George most of his life and worked at Albertson's and Safeway.

He is survived by his father, Wesley Whitehead, his six children, Jessica, Joshua, Jennifer, Jayden, Ashley and Mckenzie, two grandchildren, Francisco and Elijah.

His smile will remain imprinted in our hearts forever.

St. George--Funeral services for legendary Dixie High School coach Don Lay will be held Saturday.

Lay, who is enshrined in the Utah Coaches Hall of Fame, died Tuesday at his home in St. George. He was 79.

The baseball field at Dixie High is named after Lay, who coached the Flyers to their last state basketball championship in 1970.

He also coached Dixie to state baseball championships in 1973 and 1974.

Once, when asked how he wanted to be remembered, Lay replied, "As a winner."

In addition to his coaching, friends say, Lay loved horse racing and rodeo.

Donald Coleman Lay was born on Sept. 12, 1931 in Thompsonville, Utah. His parents were Joseph Coleman and Venice Bosh Lay.

Look who we found in Fallen Nevada!

Fallen is about 60 miles east of Reno. She's been there for 26 plus years now. She has 4 kids, 3 boys and 1 girl, 2 daughters-in-law and 5 grandkids. She married Bruce Taylor and they've been married 30 years. She owns her own beauty shop and says she loves every minute of it. Deb got a Yorkie pup for her birthday last year, her first pooch ever! Hello Y'all,
I'm HOME!!! I actually got home last Monday. A few days earlier than expected. Everyone was right, the second transplant IS harder. I received stronger and different chemo this time...not fun! I'm thrilled to have my transplants over with but wish it were ALL over. I will now be starting on a two year maintenance program that entails more chemo and heavy doses of steroids. The chemo I can handle but the steroids are aweful.
I can't thank all of you enough for your comments, thoughts and prayers! I am a strong believer in the power of prayer. I could not have gone through this past year without it. Please keep them coming for just a while longer.

ST. GEORGE - Richard (Rick) Ward Ence passed away November 9, 2010. He was born December 5, 1960 in St. George, Utah to Jay and Janice Esplin Ence. He married Tammy Webb in The St. George LDS Temple on August 25, 1982, for time and all eternity.

Rick was a lifelong resident of St. George. He graduated from Dixie High School where he set and held the state track pole vaulting record for many years. He was a Golden Glove Boxing Champion in the state of Utah.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rick served a mission in Frankfurt, Germany. He has served as a Counselor in the Bishopric, as a High Counselor, Scoutmaster, Sunday School President and Family and Marriage Class Teacher.

A graduate of several advanced insurance training organizations, Rick was owner and operator of Ence Insurance Agency in St. George. He loved and mentored youth of all ages, coaching football, basketball, and baseball. He loved horses and hunting and spending time with his family on Cedar Mountain. He loved being a grandparent. Rick is known for his heart of gold.

He is survived by his wife, Tammy; children: Amy Pratt (Tyler) of St. George, Utah, Skyler Webb Ence (Alisa) of Washington, Utah, Jesse Jay Ence of St. George, Utah, Justin Roland Ence currently serving a mission in Florianopolis, Brazil, and Blake William Ence of St. George, Utah; three grandchildren, Josie Pratt, Dallin Pratt and Nathan Ence; brothers: Kevin Ence (Debbie) of St. George, Utah, Jeffery Ence (Lisa) of Santa Clara, Utah and Ben Shorty (Annie) of St. George, Utah. Rick is also survived by his parents, Jay and Janice Ence of St. George, Utah. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shauna Ence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington Fields LDS Stake Center, 1450 South 3000 East, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday, November 12th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah and on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Stake Center, prior to services. In Memory of Rick Ence

We just learned some heart breaking news about our dear friend and class mate Rick Ence.

He passed away unexpectedly this morning from a blood clot, which was secondary to an accident on a horse during the deer hunt a few weeks ago, where the horse landed on him and crushed his pelvis. Rick was flown off the mountain and been recovering from that accident at the time.

I have quickly rounded up a few pictures to post. As soon as we get more information I will pass it along. Class of 79 sends their love to Tammy Ence, Rick's wife and his dear family.

Let the fun begin! (Lisa's title)

Well it has officially started. I had chemo last fri and mon, then transplant on tues. More chemo in a few minutes. This process was supposed to be done out patient, but when I got up this morning I passed out (Vega response). I was out for a while so John called 911 (thank goodness he was with me, my mom had just left). Ended up in the ER all day til they could get me a room. So it looks like I will be in the hospital for the duration. Actuallly I'm ok with that because the worse is still to come (so I,ve been told). I feel safer being in the hospital as it approaches. Hopefully I won't catch any germs here since my immune is gone! Other than that, I'm doing great!

Ray sent me an email this morning sharing that his father passed away early yesterday morning. He had a serious stroke on September 12th and never fully recovered. Coach Odette was a wonderful teacher, coach, friend and father. His influence was felt by the entire school and our community. He was 72 and will be greatly missed. An Update on Lisa Given Ames Bone Marrow Transplant!

Hi Everyone,
Here is the latest. I started treatment this past week with a little surgery where they replaced my old port/line and put in a double port, then moved right on to chemo. I am on a chemo pack 24/7 for four days. Then they will watch my blood and choose the optimum time to collect bone marrow/stem cells. I will be in Salt Lake for about three weeks, then I will get to go home for a week or two. As soon as I return to SLC they will hit me with SUPER MEGA doses of chemo, then start the transplant by replacing my cleaned up stem cells. That's when it gets pretty sketchy! I will be very ill especially around days 5 6 7 of the transplant. Needless to say I am not looking forward to this. The nurses have described what to expect and it's not pretty, but I do know I'm tough and can handle it (it's going back for the second transplant that will be really hard). Please continue to remember me in you thoughts and prayers, I know I can do this with help from above!

Lisa Given Ames Update and Lunch!

Just a quick update on Lisa.

Right now. . this month, (may) she is doing great. As a matter of fact a few of us met for lunch at Pizza Factory and had a great time! However. . . in June it will be a different story.

Lisa will be have a bone-marrow transplant.

Her transplant is called an autologous stem cell transplant. That is where she is her own donor. Her bone marrow blood stem cells are taken from her, (harvested) filtered and frozen until needed, then given back to her (transplanted) after she has received high doses of chemotherapy and/or radiation to destroy the cancer cells. We will try to keep everyone informed, and of course we will all keep her in our prayers! We love you Lisa!

At our reunion in 2004, Melody Barton knocked our socks off when she belted out a few jazz tunes to a minus track up at the Veyo Pool Party!

She has been singing as a regular at several clubs in Vegas now for several years and in 2007 recorded a CD of her uplifting music.

Take a little Jazz, a little Rock-Boogie, add some Gospel Soul and a lot of Inspiration and you have "Lighten Up" with Melody Bartone. (Bartone- clever!)

Her music can be found on CDbaby and at I-tunes!

went in to have a visit with our good friend and classmate Sam Gentry. He is battling ALS, (Lou Gehrigs Disease) and is currently at the Kolob Rehab and care center.

Several other classmates have gone in for a visit as well. We invite anyone local or passing through town, to drop in and see him.

Classmate Shanna Sullivan Jones happened across Chad's grave the other day, so she took a picture and sent it in for the blog.

For those that don't know, he died of a heart attack about 8 years ago. He was driving home out in Apple Valley, had chest pain and pulled his car over to the side of the road, where he passed away.

After receiving this from Shanna we tried to find his obit on line to post, but had no luck.
